It seems like bedding is one of those home items that you buy once and then keep forever, regardless of whether or not you still like it. New bedding doesn’t have to be expensive, but maybe the thought of swapping it out seems like a big deal. So I’m here to tell you that the time has come to invest in new bedding! You spend a lot of time in bed, you should love where you sleep!
We primarily use white bedding in our staging projects. Crisp, white beds really appeal to potential home buyers and give the illusion of a spa-like atmosphere. I like to use white bedding in my own home too – for the primary bedroom and for my kids’ rooms too. Some might argue that white bedding gets dirty quicker, but I think that the idea of being able to throw my bedding in the wash with some bleach is pretty great.
Regardless of whether or not you like light and neutral or big and bold, here are some of my top tips/considerations when buying new bedding:
Spend a little money
As I mentioned above, most people don’t buy new bedding all that often, so it’s okay to spend a little money to get the quality and style that you want. There is certainly a huge range of prices for bedding, but the former accountant in me likes to look at things on a cost-per-use basis to justify spending a little more. So if I spend around $300 for a new bedding set, that’s less than a dollar per day over the course of the year. I invested in a John Robshaw quilt a few years ago and while the $475 price tag was horrifying, but it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
Pay attention to laundering instructions
I need low maintenance bedding that can withstand being thrown in BOTH the washer and dryer. While others may not mind taking their bedding to the dry cleaners periodically, that just doesn’t make sense for my family. Make sure that you are buying a product that works with your lifestyle. Do you have kids, do you have dogs? Maybe a pick-stitch quilt isn’t for you if your pup sleeps in your bed – you don’t want those claws snagging the fabric.
Determine how much time you’re willing to spend making the bed
I actually like to make the bed every morning, it gives me a small sense of accomplishment when I leave the house (even if the rest of my house is a disaster). BUT, I keep my bedding pretty simple so that means spending only about 2 minutes on the task. If you don’t have the time and patience for several layers and multiple pillows and throws, then I would suggest sticking to a simple textured quilt or comforter so all you need to do each morning is pull up one layer 🙂 Remember, no one really sees your bedroom but you, so no need to buy something crazy that you can’t maintain. Stick with something that speaks to you and again, works with your lifestyle.
