anatomy of mantel styling

One of the hardest, but also the most fun, places to style in the house is over the mantel. This decorative shelf above the fireplace is open to endless style possibilities. But how do you begin? If you start with a pretty simple formula, you can change up the look with small swaps. I like to change the style of my mantel regularly with seasonal décor, but never really change the core pieces.

Let's review how to style your mantel so you can give it a go in your own home!

step 1 - start with a central feature

Start your mantel décor with a central feature item. Typically we start with a large piece such as a mirror, framed artwork, or a large framed family photo. In staging, we prefer to start with mirrors. Mirrors help reflect light within the room and you can find some great and affordable options practically anywhere.

step 2 - add a piece with height

Next, give your mantel vignette a little height by adding a taller item such as a large vase with branches or faux sprigs, or candlesticks in decorative holders. You definitely want varying heights on the mantel to create visual interest and to keep it from falling flat. We definitely prefer a tall vase with branches in staging. Maybe use green leaf or blossom branches in the spring, then switch them out for bittersweet in the fall and birch in the winter. It’s an easy way to keep your house feeling seasonal without a ton of effort or money.

STEP 3 - layer in accessories

Add in small and medium sized accessories to complete the look. These secondary items add depth and visual interest to the set. Look to add accessories of varying heights, materials, and colors, and stagger them around your center element.

step 4 - add a pop of green

We’ve said it a million times, you can't go wrong by adding a little greenery (real or fake, and anywhere in the house)! Plants add a natural warmth and pop of color. So if you aren’t using a vase with stems to add some height, bring in some pops of greenery in your accessories. Faux plants with trailing branches look amazing on mantels.
